According to a lawsuit filed on Monday, Black veterans have disproportionately having a harder time in obtaining these benefits. The suit was filed on behalf of Conley Monk Jr. by Yale Law School's Veterans Legal Services Clinic.

PTSD

A new lawsuit filed by Black veterans and a Yale law clinic has found that the Department of Veterans Affairs has been systematically denying disability compensation claims to Black veterans for decades. NPR's Quil Lawrence reports that a whistleblower informed the vets that VA internal documents reveal that Black veterans were denied benefits more often than their white counterparts.

The lawsuit was filed by Marine Vietnam veteran Conley monk and Yale's Veterans Legal Services Clinic. The lawsuit refers to statistics that show that between 2001 to 2020, the rejection rate for Black veterans of disability claims was rejected at 29.5 percent, as compared to 24.2 percent of white veterans.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for Monk and other Black veterans who were unfairly denied access to benefits. The lawsuit also seeks to oblige VA to reconsider tens of thousands of claims that were denied in error. The lawsuit was filed in federal court this week.

Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI can be mild, moderate or serious and symptoms may be immediately apparent or they may develop within a few hours or even weeks after the injury. Some signs (headache, dizziness, fatigue) are physical, whereas others can include emotions, memory, concentration or behavioral issues. TBI patients may also have trouble moving or having problems with vision and balance.

TBIs can result from an TBI if the brain is injured by an injury or bump to the head. This can occur from the force of a blunt blow or from a penetrating injury (such as the impact of a bullet). The impact can result in a skull fracture, which may result in bleeding and bruises of the brain inside the skull. The brain can swell and press against the skull, cutting off blood circulation. The injury could occur throughout the entire brain, or only a specific lobe.

Some TBIs are classified as open while others are closed. The classification is based on whether or not the skull was fractured and whether or not the skull was shattered or opened due to the impact. TBIs can vary in severity, ranging from a concussion up to a the coma. People with TBI are more at risk of developing depression, PTSD and other mental health conditions. Research suggests that having multiple moderate to severe TBIs could increase the risk of developing dementia and movement problems in later years.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, develops after people experience a trauma. The symptoms can manifest immediately following the event or even years after. They can include memory problems as well as difficulty in concentrating and sleeping, feelings of anger and irritability and being easily frightened or jittery. Some people may feel depressed or suicidal. The PTSD condition can cause issues at workplace, in relationships and at home. It can also cause dependence, which includes alcohol or other drugs.

Psychotherapy can treat symptoms like eye movement desensitisation (EMDR) and cognitive processing therapy. Depression

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you change your negative thoughts and behaviors, while interpersonal therapy focuses on relationships. There are also group therapies that bring patients with the same condition together in a safe and supportive setting.
